A suspect is set to appear in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a 77-year-old Limpopo farmer during a violent attack at the weekend.

Attie Mahne, 77, and his wife Petro were attacked on their farm near Baltimore in the Tolwe policing area in the Capricorn District on Saturday morning.

The couple were tied up at knifepoint by the suspects who brutally assaulted them before fleeing with items including cash and a firearm.

Mahne was declared dead at the scene while Petro was taken to hospital. It is understood that she has since been discharged.

According to the police report, Mahne had left the farmhouse around 16:00 to check on cattle when “two male suspects sneaked in and entered the farmhouse, and tied up a female victim (wife) inside the house.”

When he returned, he found the intruders in the house who tied him up at knifepoint and then assaulted the couple.

His wife alerted the farm watch, and responders declared Mahne dead upon their arrival at the scene.

A statement from the Limpopo police said that a 28-year-old male suspect had been arrested in the early hours of Tuesday by members of the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, Tolwe Detectives, Bosbeld Misdaad Ondersoeke, and Bosveld Plaasbeveiliging Security Company.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the swift arrest.

Police said the search for the second suspect is ongoing and investigations continue.
