Five people were killed and several others injured when a Greyhound bus overturned on the R33 between eMkhondo and Amsterdam in Mpumalanga on Monday.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said the driver appeared to have lost control of the long-distance coach before it overturned. Five passengers died at the scene. Six passengers were seriously injured, while 20 others sustained minor injuries.

The bus driver was among the injured. Paramedics from various ambulance services transported the wounded to a hospital in Mkhondo.

Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said investigators were still working to establish the cause of the crash, although wet road conditions were suspected to have contributed.

“We are still piecing together what happened, but the rainy weather at the time is suspected to have played a role,” he said.

Mmusi added that earlier reports claiming the bus had more than 80 passengers were incorrect. A passenger list showed 65 people left Johannesburg, but several disembarked during the journey. Only 31 occupants, including the driver, were on board at the time of the crash.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, urged motorists to take extra precautions during adverse weather.

“Every driver must prioritize their own safety and that of other road users. Let us save lives by being highly alert and obeying the rules. Long-distance drivers must rest sufficiently along the way,” he said.

Macie conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Investigations are continuing.
