As South Africans continue to take advantage of Black Friday deals, First National Bank (FNB) customers faced disruptions on the bank’s mobile app.
Many users reported receiving error messages and being unable to log in, preventing them from accessing accounts or completing transactions during one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
The glitches come at a time when the country’s shoppers are making record-breaking transactions: as of midday, around 1.5 million transactions worth over R500 million had been processed through major payment systems, according to Ecentric Payment Systems and Peach Payments.
FNB also said that the app is not down, but intermittent failures are occurring due to extraordinarily high transaction volumes. FNB confirmed technical difficulties affecting multiple services, while assuring that other banking channels remained operational.
"We would like to inform our valued clients that we are experiencing some technical difficulties affecting some of our services, including the FNB App, Cellphone Banking, CashPlus and other banking services," the bank said.
"We’re currently experiencing high transaction volumes. While thousands are processed successfully, some customers may face intermittent FNB App access. We’re monitoring closely and apologise for any inconvenience. All other channels remain fully operational".
The bank also reassured customers that other banking channels remained operational and that technical teams are actively working to resolve the issues.
"Please be assured that our technical teams are actively working to resolve the matter. We will provide updates as soon as services are restored. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused".
Popular broadcaster Sol Phenduka also took to X, saying that the app was down, adding that this was a blessing for most people.
"@FNBSA app is down on "Black Friday". This is a blessing in disguise, but people are too angry to see it".
