The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tshwane has successfully recovered a hijacked truck with medicine worth more than R2 million following a coordinated and rapid response that unfolded across multiple policing units.

According to SAPS, the incident occurred at approximately 08:00 in the Wierdabrug policing area, where a Freightliner truck transporting Codeine medication was hijacked while en route to its destination.

The value of the cargo is estimated at around R2.5 million.

Tshwane District Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the truck’s tracking system played a crucial role in the operation.

“Immediately after the hijacking, the tracking signal was activated, and the information was circulated to surrounding police stations and specialised SAPS units,” he explained.

Van Dyk said this triggered a joint tracking operation, and by roughly 11:00, the vehicle was traced to Monument Road in Mnandi, within the Olievenhoutbosch policing precinct. Officers moved in swiftly, finding the truck abandoned but still containing its full consignment of Codeine medication.

“A suspect was found inside the truck and arrested on the scene. Crime Scene Management was summoned to process the area and collect evidence to support further investigation and court proceedings,” Van Dyk said.

Tshwane District Commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine applauded the officers for their swift and coordinated effort, noting that the successful recovery demonstrates the continued importance of collaboration between SAPS, private tracking companies, and community safety structures.

Thine added that such partnerships remain key in combating organised crime syndicates that target high-value commercial cargo.
