Staff Reporter|Published

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a warning to pet owners regarding the recall of certain batches of dry dog and cat food

This alert follows a notification from RCL Foods, a reputable player in the pet food industry, detailing potential health risks associated with some of its most well-known brands.

It is revealed that brands affected by this recall include Bobtail, Catmor, Canine Cuisine, Optimizor, Ultra Pet, and Superwoof. In total, approximately 55 352 cases of these products, produced between May 26 and June 17, 2025, have been distributed across South Africa. Pet owners are urged to take immediate action to ensure their pets' safety.

According to RCL Foods, they identified elevated levels of Deoxynivalenol (DON) in certain batches of maize used to produce dry pet food.

DON is a naturally occurring mycotoxin found ingrains such as maize. The presence of DON in these products originated from raw materials(maize) used during production. The final pet food contained levels exceeding 1000 ppb (1ppm).This may lead to loss of appetite and digestive discomfort in pets.

Pet owners must stop feeding their pets the affected products and should return these to the point of purchase for a full refund, with or without any proof of purchase. The NCC will monitor the recall to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.
