Gwarube to outline readiness for 2025 matric exams

Basic education Minister Siviwe Gwarube will update the nation on preparations for the 2025 matric exams, covering candidate numbers, exam centres, learner support, system readiness, and security measures

The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, is expected to brief the media on Monday, 20 October 2025, on the state of readiness for the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The NSC exams are a critical milestone in South Africa’s education calendar and are set to commence on Tuesday, 21 October. 

During the press briefing, Gwarube will present detailed information regarding the total number of candidates registered to sit for the 2025 NSC exams, the number and distribution of examination centres across all provinces, and the level of preparedness of both learners and the education system to administer the exams nationwide.

According to the Department of Basic Education, the Minister will also elaborate on the support measures that have been put in place to assist learners in preparing for the final exams. In addition, she is expected to address the readiness of the education system to manage the examinations effectively and securely.

“The Minister will outline: the total number of candidates registered to write the 2025 NSC exams; the number and distribution of examination centres across provinces; the support measures put in place to assist learners in preparation for the exams; the readiness of learners to sit for the examinations; and the readiness of the basic education system to effectively administer and manage the exams nationwide,” the Department said in a statement.

The Department further confirmed that Gwarube will highlight any threats that have been detected and the strategies that have been implemented to mitigate them.

She will be joined by the Members of Executive Councils (MECs) for Education from the various provinces during the briefing.
