A manhunt for suspects was launched by police on Friday, following the fatal shooting of two police detectives in Roodepoort.

It is believed that the officers were transporting a suspect, Jabulani Moyo, when the incident occurred.

The two police officers, identified as a sergeant and a warrant officer, were in the process of returning Jabulani Moyo to prison. Moyo had just appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court in connection with a business robbery case that took place in February 2023. While in Roodepoort CBD, they were shot at and disarmed.

The Sergeant was certified dead at the crime scene, while the Warrant Officer, who was rushed to the hospital, was certified dead upon arrival.

"Moyo was seen driving the police vehicle that was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene. Police have opened a case of murder, with two counts, for investigation," police confirmed in a statement released on Friday afternoon.

Investigations are under way.

Authorities are urging anyone who possesses information that could aid in the investigation or lead to the apprehension of the suspect/s to come forward. Information can be provided by calling the nearest police station, contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or anonymously via the MySAPS App, which is available for download on smartphones.
