Western Cape police say they have intensified efforts in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of seven-year-old Joshlin Smith, with officers descending on the Middelpos informal settlement in Saldanha Bay on Friday afternoon.

The operation followed fresh leads received by the South African Police Service (SAPS), which remains committed to resolving the case.

Smith was reported missing from her home in Diazville, Saldanha Bay, on Monday, 19 February 2024.

Despite three individuals, including her mother, being convicted and sentenced in May 2025 for kidnapping and human trafficking, Smith's whereabouts remain unknown, and the search for her continues.

"SAPS previously stated, even though three individuals including the mother of the child were sentenced in May 2025 for kidnapping and human trafficking, the disappearance without trace of the child remained a priority for the SAPS in the Western Cape, hence the investigation was never closed," said Brigadier Novela Potelwa of the office of the provincial commissioner.

The Friday search involved local police, SAPS detectives, K-9 units, as well as search and rescue teams scouring an identified area in Saldanha Bay. While it is uncertain if the latest efforts will yield results, police maintain that they are obligated to act on every tip.

"It is worth reiterating that police have an obligation to follow up and test all information that is brought to their attention," said Potelwa.

As the investigation continues, SAPS is appealing to the public to allow officers the space to work without interference.

“A humble plea is hereby made that the search teams be afforded space to perform their duties as the investigation continues,” Potelwa said.
