Questions are swirling around the existence of the so-called young journalist who reportedly accompanied Kenny Kunene to the house of Katiso "TK" Molefe, the murder accused in the case of musician DJ Sumbody.

Kunene was found at Molefe's Sandton house this week as the SAPS Political Killings Task Team and the Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives nabbed Molefe, along with three others at various locations in Gauteng.

Molefe has been named as the alleged mastermind behind Oupa "DJ Sumbody" Sefoka's 2022 murder. The musician, who also the owner of the club Ayepyep in Pretoria, was murdered in a hail of bullets with little headway on his murder investigation.

Molefe arrested after Mkhwanazi exposé

KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, named the DJ Sumbody murder investigation, among case dockets which were being allegedly being suppressed by Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya, who it is alleged, was being influenced by police minister Senzo Mchunu, who has since been placed on special leave, pending further investigations.

The Patriotic Alliance, of which Kunene is the deputy president, has also refused to disclose the journalist's identity, further fuelling questions about the presence of that so-called journalist at the house. Kunene has been on a televised media tour, saying he was accompanying a journalist from his media company, Africa News Global.

Speaking to IOL on Thursday, PA spokesperson Steve Motale declined to reveal the identity of the so-called journalist in question.

“You know this journalist that you’re asking about, he’s still fresh from varsity,” Motale claimed.

“It’s his first year in the job from varsity," he added.

When asked why the journalist did not write a story about the police arresting Molefe, Motale said that it was not the focus of the story they intended to tell. This is despite Kunene publicly saying they had been to the house of Molefe for an exclusive interview.

“This guy is 23-years-old, you’re destroying him,” he told IOL.

Motale insisted the party had nothing more to add.

“We have nothing more to say…We feel we have done our part as far as the story is concerned,” he said.

“We consider the matter closed, and we are no longer taking any questions from the media regarding this matter.”

He added that once Kunene’s replacement as MMC for Transport in the City of Joburg is named later this week, PA president Gayton McKenzie is expected to appoint a law firm, which will be tasked with conducting a forensic investigation into the matter.

Kunene's news websites

Meanwhile, a dive into the ANG website showed that there were no more than 10 published news articles between March last year and July 2025. The most recent circle was about Kunene's version of events after the Molefe incident, and little news about the reporting of Kunene and the so-called journalist experiencing the arrest of Molefe.

It was also evident that most articles were written by an author named ANG Reporter, while there was no telephonic information and no work address. There were however, email addresses for the unnamed editor, admin and a tip-off e-mail addressed.

When IOL raised questions about bylines of the ANG website, Motale said most articles were based on media statements.

“It’s standard procedure. For something like a press release, we don’t give journalists' bylines. We want them to work hard - why would you give someone a byline for a story that’s everywhere?” he said.

“When it's just a story that everyone has, should you attach a byline to it? That’s the motive… that’s how we work at African News Global,” he told IOL.

Motale said once new information related to the matter becomes available, the media would be updated.

McKenzie defends Kunene

Earlier this week, McKenzie described Kunene as "too accessible for his own good."

“That guy has such a soft character. That’s my fight with him always - he’s too accessible. One minute he’s in a squatter camp, the next he’s in the suburbs. He’s never at home,” he said.

McKenzie, who also serves as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, said only a full investigation would determine the truth.

“People must also know we’ve worked very hard to rebuild our reputation after prison,” he said.

“We will never risk that by associating with criminals, even if they did this thing.”

“I want to congratulate the cops again. I’m glad they caught them. You will not find me or Mr. Kunene in the company of such people. What happened was very unfortunate.”

On Tuesday, the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court granted the state a seven-day postponement in the case involving four suspects: Michael Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana, and Katiso Molefe.

They face charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the 2022 triple murder of DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza.
