A 40-YEAR-old pastor is scheduled to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing grave charges of raping a 14-year-old girl in a case that has shocked the local community. The alleged assault took place within the very church walls meant to serve as a sanctuary.

The harrowing incident reportedly unfolded on the evening of July 9. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the pastor allegedly summoned the young girl to the church in Sibasa.

Upon her arrival, the teenager found the pastor waiting for her alone inside the church office. It is alleged that the man then locked the door, trapping the girl inside. He is accused of forcing her to perform sexual acts before repeatedly raping her. Following the alleged assault, the suspect reportedly threatened the victim, instructing her to remain silent about the ordeal.

For 10 days, the traumatic secret was kept. However, on Saturday, July 19, the girl found the strength to disclose the alleged abuse to her family. They acted immediately, notifying the authorities and setting a swift investigation into motion.

The case was handed over to the specialised Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Their investigation culminated in the pastor's arrest on Sunday, July 20.

The bravery of the young victim in revealing the alleged crime was commended by Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe. Officials have also used this deeply troubling case to urge parents and guardians to foster open communication with their children and to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious behaviour to the police without delay.

Colonel Ledwaba said the police investigation is ongoing.
