THE African National Congress (ANC) is mourning the death of its Women's League Deputy President, Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe.

She was also a Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Tourism.

She passed away at the age of 64 at her home in Westville in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

The party described her as a "lifelong activist and servant of the people".

"Lala kahle, Comrade Lungu. You walked with dignity, you led with humility, and you gave your all without asking for anything in return. Your name is inscribed in the story of our freedom," the ANC shared in a tribute.

Meanwhile, the Presiding Officers of Parliament, Thoko Didiza, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, have expressed their deep shock at Mnganga-Gcabashe's death.

“Honourable Mnganga-Gcabashe was the embodiment of dignified public service. She served in Parliament with humility and unwavering dedication. In every committee she led, she was firm yet fair, compassionate yet principled. Her contributions to the oversight work of Parliament were not for personal recognition, but for the betterment of our democracy and the people we serve," they said in a joint statement.

The Inkatha Freedom Party Women’s Brigade also shared a message of condolences.

"In this moment of grief, we extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Mnganga and Gcabashe families, her loved ones, and the entire leadership and membership of the ANCWL. The pain of losing someone who played such a vital role in her community is one that resonates across political lines, and we mourn alongside you," said IFP Women’s Brigade National Chairperson, Phumzile Buthelezi.

The Department of Tourism Minister, Patricia De Lille, said Mnganga-Gcabashe understood what oversight meant and always advised on solutions to grow tourism.

"She taught me about protocol in a loving way. Her vision was always rooted in uplifting communities and promoting South Africa's rich tourism offering. Her passing leaves a void in Parliament, the tourism sector, and the many lives she touched through her work. We honour her legacy, ensuring that tourism benefitted all South Africans," the department said.
