THE KWAZULU-NATAL police have launched a manhunt for suspects linked to the fatal shooting of eight people on Friday night.

The shooting incident took place at the Zama informal settlement at U Section, Umlazi, at around 9pm.

KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshuinda said the police responded to reports of multiple murders and, upon arrival at the scene, found eight people lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victims, six men and two women, were aged between 22 and 40.

"It is reported that the victims were inside the dwelling when an unknown number of suspects entered and opened fire, killing them at the scene. Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are under way, and police have launched a manhunt for the suspects."

Durban-based private ambulance service ALS Paramedics said they responded to the shooting alongside SAPS and multiple security personnel to find a horrific scene.

Spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics arrived after 9pm to find the entire area cornered off.

"Together with EMRS, ALS Paramedics were shown where the lifeless bodies lay outside what is believed to be a tavern. Six men and two women were declared deceased on the scene due to the multiple gunshot wounds they had sustained."

The police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can assist in the investigation to contact their nearest police station or call the Crime Stop number, 08600 10111.
