Suspect appears in court for #MosesMabhidaStaium violence

Durban-  One of the men who is alleged to have been involved in a mass brawl at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night appeared in the Durban Regional Court on Monday.

Phelelani Jojisa, is accused of being part of a pitch invasion and obstructing police officers.

The 32-year-old made his first appearance in a courtroom filled with journalists and curious onlookers. 

He is accused of being part of the violence that erupted at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night after Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-0 to Free State Stars during the Nedbank Cup semi-final match.

Three security guards were assaulted by rioting fans during the pitch invasion.

His case is postponed until Wednesday for investigators to verify his address. He is being detained at Durban central police station.

In the aftermath of the loss, Kaizer Chief fans rioted as they invaded the pitch and fought with security guards. A video of a security guard being kicked on the chest went viral.

The incident had been widely condemned with various political parties calling for stern action to be taken. 

This is not the first violent incident to happen in South African soccer. 

Last year, violence broke between Sundowns and Orlando Pirates supporters during a Premier Soccer League match.  

Just like Kaiser Chiefs, Orlando Pirates had been suffering a poor run of form when the violence broke out.
