A disturbing video, which captured children consuming alcohol in broad daylight under adult supervision, has sparked outrage on X (formerly Twitter) and highlighted what many perceive as a concerning display of ignorance among South African parents.
This incident suggests that some parents are not only neglecting their responsibilities but also failing to grasp the potential dangers and long-term consequences of their actions, seemingly disregarding anything that might jeopardise their children's safety. In accordance with the POPI Act, IOL has elected not to republish the video.
The situation has alarmed the government, prompting a statement from the Department of Social Development (DSD). The DSD expressed its shock and committed to holding those who encouraged this behaviour accountable.
The department highlighted that while the festive season is a time for happiness and renewal, it is also a period where the "risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse increase, particularly among children and young people".
The DSD is upholding the Children's Act (38 of 2005), which promotes the rights and protection of children. Consistent with this, the DSD reminded all families, including parents and caregivers, of their ongoing responsibility to remain protective and vigilant during this time.
"I urge all South Africans to avoid excessive alcohol use and to say no to drugs during the festive season and beyond. Alcohol and drugs rob families of precious moments, fuel violence, contribute to road fatalities, and derail the future of our children and youth," said the Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe.
"To the youth of South Africa, choose fun, games, sport, and quality family time during this festive period, and not alcohol or drugs. You are precious, and your future matters. Staying sober helps you enjoy the festive season safely," Tolashe added.
Social media users expressed public outrage and concern on X regarding the apparent parental negligence.
One user, @big_ramz, commented with disappointment: "This is disappointing, man. Why would such old people condone this?"
Another user, Wisani Teyis, questioned the content of the bottles: "How sure are you that there's alcohol inside.....courts don't play games".
A third user, W.h.a.t.s.y. o.u.r., refuted the suggestion that the contents might not be alcohol, replying: "Sure, let's say your theory is right (which is totally stupid by the way), why would a sane person give kids alcohol bottles to begin with? What's the logic behind that?"
Concern and curiosity continued to dominate the discussion threads under the video on X.
