A WRENCHVILLE resident in Kuruman is living in constant fear for his life and the safety of his family after miraculously surviving a ruthless shooting.
His 14-year-old son was also injured during the incident, with a bullet narrowly missing his heart.
Kauglin Naidoo stated that more than four months have passed since the shooting took place at his residence, yet no arrests have been made.
“The men were sent to kill me, although I do not know what their motive was,” Naidoo said. “The only reason I can think of is that the hitman is a rival businessman who is dealing in Wesselite stones.”
He expressed fear that the attackers could return at any time to “finish the job.”
“My entire family is being targeted. My sister is afraid of going back to work, and I am a single father of three young boys,” he added.
Naidoo also shared that he is constantly being “stalked”.
“A Fortuner and bakkie follow me wherever I go and the same vehicles regularly drive past the home of the mother of my child. My son has not attended school for four months as he is severely traumatised. He is undergoing counselling and has not gained full use of his left hand.”
Naidoo recounted the events of September 2, 2024, when two suspects entered his home at around 9pm.
“Their faces were exposed and they never stole anything or made any demands. One of the men threatened my sister at gunpoint on the stoep. The other suspect shot my son when he walked through the passage and shot me when I came to inspect what the commotion was all about. I chased after them and also fired shots but was unable to get very far as I was weak from a huge amount of blood loss.”
He said he was shot near his heart, with the bullet lodging in his shoulder blade.
“I sustained six broken ribs in the process and I had to walk around for eight weeks before the bullet could be removed. Hospital security guarded our beds and no one was allowed into our ward. However, we have not been afforded any protection from the police.”
Naidoo stated that the police wanted to send his firearm for ballistic testing, but he refused.
“I refused because I will be defenceless the next time I am attacked. I have no intention of uprooting my family and my priority is to protect my children at all costs.”
He questioned the apparent lack of progress in the investigation and said that the police had yet to take statements from eyewitnesses.
“I have unsuccessfully tried countless times to get intervention from the provincial SAPS and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
“I am being sent to and from Wrenchville, Kuruman, and the Kimberley police station, where the matter was transferred, while there appears to be no progress on the case. I cannot continue living in this state of anxiety because the shooters and hitmen are freely roaming the streets.”
Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers confirmed that the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit is investigating an attempted murder case opened at the Wrenchville police station.
“A man from Wrenchville and his teenage son are believed to have been shot at their home. No arrest has been made yet. The investigation is continuing,” Ehlers said.
