Two accused who were convicted for killing their female partners in two different incidents have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment each, in the Calvinia regional court.

SAPS Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam on Wednesday said the police attended to a murder scene on March 8, after the body of a 30 year old woman Candy Kotze was found lying in a pool of blood at a farm in Oorlogkloof.

“The accused Gerald Watts, 35, was arrested on March 8 and charged for her murder.”

He stated that in an unrelated incident, another accused Jaco Kok, 38, was arrested for the brutal murder of his 34 year old girlfriend at Cloudskraal farm on February 5 2023.

Sam said both accused were sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment for murder and declared unfit to possess firearms.

Northern Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, praised the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Samuel Mapedi for ensuring that gender based violence and femicide crimes were dealt with harshly during and beyond the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.

“These convictions are as a result of strengthened partnerships between investigators and prosecutors.”

She pledged that law enforcement was committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all vulnerable groups during the festive season and beyond.
