The police arrested two men while they were cooking the meat of livestock that was suspected to have been stolen from a farm near Fraserburg.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant Sergio Kock said the suspects were found cooking a calf at their home on December 28 at around midnight.

“The members confiscated the meat, knives, pots, clothes and containers on the scene.

“The 25 and 37 year old suspects are expected to appear soon in the Fraserburg magistrates court on charges of possession of suspected stolen stock.”

He encouraged farmers and owners of cattle to be vigilant over the festive period, when there was a full moon, over weekends and at the end and beginning of the month when stock theft and slaughtering was common.

Kock advised owners to brand their livestock, maintain a livestock register, invest in CCTV cameras, to check fences regularly and to refrain from employing undocumented persons on farms.

“Farmers should work together with the local SAPS and stock theft units,“ he stated.
