Suspect arrested for murder of missing five-year-old girl

THE KAKAMAS police have arrested a 37-year-old man for the murder of five-year-old Sharné Basson, who went missing earlier this month.

Sharné’s body was found in the veld near Alheit, Kakamas on Monday. She was apparently last seen on November 4 and was reported missing on November 5.

Kakamas police spokesperson Captain Nelis Prins said the suspect was arrested at his home in Alheit on Monday evening.

“The suspect was arrested by detectives from Kakamas SAPS for the murder of a five-year-old girl who was reported as missing on Saturday, November 5, 2022. The suspect will appear in the Kakamas Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder,” said Prins.

He added that preliminary investigations indicate that Sharné was murdered on November 4, during the afternoon.

“Police investigations are continuing and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Prins.
