SEVERAL families were displaced following severe thunderstorms and heavy rain that wreaked havoc in the Ga Segonyana municipal area near Kuruman earlier this week.
The most affected areas include Batlharos, Mothibistad, 7 Miles, Magojaneng and Kagung.
Roofs of houses were ripped off, walls collapsed, furniture was damaged and the supply of electricity was disrupted after power lines collapsed during the storm on Tuesday.
Shacks were also blown away by severe winds while trees were uprooted and several vehicles were damaged.
It is reported that the storm erupted on Monday night and carried on until Tuesday morning.
It is not known how many houses were destroyed during the storm.
The Magojaneng Community Hall was opened as a shelter for those without homes while the municipality continues to work on assisting the affected families. Volunteers also jumped in to offer accommodation as the mopping-up process kicked off on Wednesday.
The power line that supplies electricity to Promiseland collapsed. By Wednesday morning the electricity supply had not been restored in many areas, while the electricity in Mothibistad was only restored yesterday.
Residents said the storm has dampened their festive season plans and preparations.
Homeowner Lesego Moreng, from Magojaneng, said he has suffered losses due to the storm, adding that it hit while he was at a shop and he had to rush home after learning that his roof had been blown off.
“It was only by the grace of God that my children were unharmed. There was only one room that was not affected, which they could hide in. But there was no way of saving the furniture from the hail,” Moreng said.
He added that they are still waiting to hear from the municipality regarding any assistance being offered.
At the time of going to print there was still no comment from the Ga Segonyana Municipality as all the relevant people were engaged in disaster management meetings.
