The suspects who were allegedly involved in Tuesday's cash-in-transit heist on the N2 highway near the NPC Cement Factory have been linked to multiple murders in the province.
Two suspects were involved in a gun battle with Durban cops on Che Guevara Road in Berea hours after the brazen cash-in-transit heist that brought traffic on the N2 to a standstill.
One suspect died on the scene following multiple gunshot wounds, while his accomplice was taken to hospital.
His condition by Wednesday morning is unknown.
Police spokesperson Robert Nethsuinda said no police officers were injured during the shootout.
He said the two suspects were positively linked to five murders.
The first triple murder took place in January this year in the Ntambanana policing precinct while a double murder took place in the same area in June 2024.
Speaking about the CIT heist, police said suspects fled the scene through Chatsworth.
They opened fire on a taxi, killing one woman, police said.
Another woman walking on the road was shot and wounded.
Nethsuinda said police had been following up on their vehicles, which led them to the Berea area.
He said one of the vehicles which was hijacked in the KwaMakhutha area and used in the robbery was found abandoned in Mariannhill, with what looked to be money bags inside.
Dramatic footage of the cash van being blown up on the N2 has gone viral on social media.
