A 35-year-old nanny is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 29, 2025, after being arrested for allegedly stealing a nine-month-old baby from his home in Durban.
According to police, the child’s mother returned home on Saturday afternoon, September 27, to find both her son and the nanny missing.
Concerned, she contacted the woman, who admitted to being in Empangeni with the child but failed to provide a credible reason for leaving the house without permission.
The nanny further instructed the mother to travel alone to Empangeni to fetch her baby.
The incident was immediately reported to the Durban Central Police Station.
Specialised police units were activated, and in the early hours of Sunday, September 28, a police operation was carried out in Empangeni.
Officers arrested the nanny and recovered the child, who was found unharmed.
The infant has since undergone precautionary medical checks.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly deceived her boyfriend by claiming that the baby was their child.
The boyfriend had reportedly been paying her R2,500 a month to cover the infant’s needs.
Police confirmed that the woman will face charges in connection with the incident when she appears in court on Monday.
