In a landmark development that has captivated and outraged the nation, the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has officially filed criminal charges with the South African Police Service (SAPS) following the tragic death of a baboon named Raygun.

The charges, submitted in Delmas on March 20, 2025, come after an arduous investigation marked by alleged intimidation and evidence tampering.

The killing of Raygun, which occurred on February 6, 2025, has raised serious concerns about animal welfare and prompted widespread calls for justice.

A pathology report indicated that Raygun suffered injuries prior to his death, thus supporting allegations of animal cruelty. This evidence has sparked national outrage and rallied supporters of animal rights, all demanding accountability over the deadly attack.

Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, manager of the NSPCA's Wildlife Protection Unit, characterised the investigation as fraught with difficulties.

"This was not an easy case," he said. "It was met with resistance at every turn. Despite the many obstacles, the NSPCA remained the driving force behind this investigation, ensuring that the case was pursued."

According to the NSPCA, the investigation reached a "significant deadlock" due to community reluctance to provide information, despite evidence suggesting multiple individuals were involved in the baboon's death.

Legal constraints prevent the NSPCA from revealing the identities of the accused until they make a formal court appearance.

The organization has called on the SAPS to appoint an Investigating Officer to advance the case and gather formal statements from all parties involved.

"We understand the frustration and anger of those who seek justice for Raygun, and we share it," the NSPCA spokesperson Jacques Peacock said.

"We have done everything in our power to ensure this case moves forward. Now, the justice system must do its part."

The NSPCA has praised public support throughout the investigation, noting that community pressure has been instrumental in keeping the case visible and active.

"Justice for Raygun extends beyond a single case, it is a stand against cruelty and a call to protect all animals from suffering and harm," Peacock said.
