SOL PLAATJE Municipality on Tuesday extended daytime and nightly water interruptions due to the current heatwave scorching the city and low water levels at Newton Reservoir.

Water cuts will now take place from noon until 5pm and from 8pm until 5am.

Municipal manager Thapelo Matlala said the Newton Reservoir has a storage capacity of 261 megalitres and comprises 102-, 91-, 45- and 23-megalitre reservoirs that are “low to empty”.

He stated that the leakages in the main supply pipelines further exacerbated the production shortfall, resulting in inadequate supplies.

“The municipality appeals to residents to refrain from watering their gardens and to reserve water for consumption and other critical uses only,” said Matlala.

“The community is encouraged to adopt water-conserving habits. This will ensure that water pumped into the reservoirs can reach levels that generate enough pressure to supply all areas of Kimberley.”

Matlala advised residents who were experiencing water interruptions outside the stipulated times to contact the call centre on 053 8306 111 or the toll-free number on 080 1229 010.

“Your patience and understanding are highly appreciated as we forge towards guaranteeing water security,” Matlala concluded.
