A provincial official funeral category 2 will be held for the former deputy Speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Gauta George Mokgoro, at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley on Saturday at 8am.
A PROVINCIAL official funeral category 2 will be held for the former deputy Speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Gauta George Mokgoro, on Saturday at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley at 8am.
The spokesperson for the Office of the Premier, Bronwyn Thomas-Abrahams, said the national flag would fly at half-mast on Saturday.
“A provincial task team with representatives from the Mokgoro family and different government departments will be involved in all aspects of the funeral preparations. The Premier, Dr Zamani Saul, will deliver the eulogy at the special provincial official funeral,” said Thomas-Abrahams.
Saul expressed his gratitude to Mokgoro’s family for his contribution to the people of the Northern Cape and the country.
“On behalf of the Northern Cape provincial government and its people we extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
A memorial service was held at the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature on Thursday.
The Speaker of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Newrene Klaaste, said Mokgoro completed all the chapters in the books of the legislature.
“He was committed to improving lives and served the Northern Cape community and the country at large through the various roles he occupied as a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature and as a Member of Parliament with diligence until his passing.”
She extended heartfelt condolences to Mokgoro’s loved ones.
“We mourn the passing of their father, and a giant in the struggle for democracy in our country.”
Saul, SACP provincial secretary Dr Norman Shushu, ANC regional chairperson Mangaliso Matika and ANC regional secretary Wende Marekwa visited Mokgoro’s homestead to convey their condolences.
The ANC in the Northern Cape stated that Mokgoro served the Province with great humility and passion.
“He will be remembered for the love he showed for people. Bra G, as he was known, was a member of the ANC and in 1949, at the age of 14 years, he dedicated his life to the freedom of this country and its people. He was detained for eight years on Robben Island and was later banished to Kuruman away from his family in Kimberley.
“The ANC sends its heartfelt condolences to Bra G’s children, the rest of the family, his friends and comrades.”
