THE NORTHERN Cape SAPS Second-Hand Goods office and Partnership Policing, in collaboration with the Provincial Community Policing Forum Board, Transnet, and Kimberley Emergency Services (EMS), participated in a crime awareness event that was organised by Sinqobile Equestrian Security Services (SESS) - Transnet's contracted security company - at the De Beers Stadium in Kimberley on 14 November.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam explained that the programme was the culmination of efforts to strengthen public and private partnerships in the fight against non-ferrous metal crimes. This initiative directly addresses copper cable theft and vandalism, as outlined by SESS brand manager Thulani Makhubu.

He further elaborated that the community engagement sports day aimed to raise awareness and mobilise civil society against copper cable theft and other non-ferrous metal crimes, which have a detrimental impact on the economy.

Approximately 300 community members attended the event, which featured soccer and netball matches aimed at promoting community cohesion and addressing social challenges.

Greenpoint and Du Toitspan primary schools also participated in the sporting activities and were awarded medals, trophies, and sports equipment sponsored by SESS for their involvement.

Representing the Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Colonel Michael Diamond stated that the police alone cannot effectively combat crime and expressed his appreciation to SESS for demonstrating active partnership in tackling copper cable theft and vandalism.

He emphasised that through such collaborations, the police can create better platforms for youth activism against cable theft. He urged the youth and the broader community to serve as the eyes and ears of the police to help dismantle syndicates involved in copper cable theft and infrastructure vandalism.

SESS concluded the day with a parade showcasing its crime-fighting resources, which included the SAPS K9 Unit, motorcycles, and the Mounted Unit.

“If you see something, say something. Report any criminal activity to your nearest police station or call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS app for anonymous crime tip-offs,” said Sergeant Sam.

“All information received will be treated with strict confidentiality.”
