THE NORTHERN Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL), led by the chairperson of committees, Gift van Staden, will embark on oversight visits to municipalities in the Frances Baard District from September 6 to 8.
Sol Plaatje Municipality will make a presentation to the committee on Wednesday on its infrastructure interventions and revitalisation projects.
NCPL spokesperson Carmen Gopane said the committee would enquire about the electricity tariffs that have caused a public outcry.
“This will be followed by a physical oversight visit to the Newton and Riverton reservoirs, as part of the oversight engagement to better understand the water challenges and infrastructure the municipality is faced with,” said Gopane.
“The oversight committee, along with the Auditor-General, the South African Local Government Association, the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs and Provincial Treasury, will engage with Phokwane Municipality on financial and governance matters on Thursday. Phokwane Municipality and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will make presentations on the Ganspan sports complex in Jan Kempdorp.”
She added that oversight visits would be conducted at the Warrenton water treatment plant on Friday.
“The provision of water by Magareng Municipality has been highlighted as a concern in both newspaper coverage and engagements with members of the public. A presentation by the municipality and a physical visit is a high priority for the committee in its effort to ensure proper service delivery to the needs of the community.
“Once the oversight has been concluded, the committee will deliberate on the oversight report and the report will be tabled in the House, inclusive of observations and recommendations.”
Gopane stated that the report would be made available on the www.ncpleg.gov.za website and would be shared with all the relevant organs of state to implement and to report back to the legislature.
