FIVE people lost their lives in a motor vehicle accident at the Modderrivier and Ritchie intersection on the N12 on Sunday.

Traffic was severely impacted, with delays lasting approximately three and a half hours.

Northern Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the Modderrivier police were investigating a case of culpable homicide after a red Corsa bakkie and an SANDF minibus reportedly collided at the N12 Modderrivier-Ritchie crossing.

“The accident occurred on October 6 at about 1.20pm. Five of the seven adult male occupants of the bakkie died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident,” said Kock.

He added that preliminary reports indicated that the SANDF minibus was travelling with 15 occupants including 11 women and four men.

“All passengers were taken to hospital for medical attention.”

Kock confirmed that the N12 was closed to traffic between 1.20pm and 5pm on Sunday.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Brian Moleme at 061 4699 235. “The investigation is ongoing,” he added.
