A 35-YEAR-old Northern Cape man, Pogio Tlhoilwe, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Warrenton Regional Court after he was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the incident occurred on December 20, 2018.
“The court heard that the accused and the complainant were walking home together when the accused dragged her (the complainant) into the stadium premises and raped her,” said Sam.
In addition to the life sentence handed down to Tlhoilwe, the court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register.
Sam added that the investigating officer in the matter was applauded for his part in securing the sentence.
“The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, and her management team applauded the Hartswater SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for securing the life sentence. Lieutenant-General Otola praised the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Sidwel Dastile, for the thorough investigation and for ensuring that justice is served for the victims of gender-based violence and femicide,” said Sam.
