Man accused of raping, killing girl (5) appears in court
THE 37-YEAR-old man accused of the rape and murder of five-year-old Sharné Basson appeared before the Kakamas Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Sharné’s body was discovered in the veld near Alheit, Kakamas on Monday.
The five-year-old had disappeared earlier this month and she was reported missing on November 5.
The accused, Jan Heyns, was arrested at his home in Alheit on Monday after the discovery of the little girl’s body.
Kakamas police spokesperson Captain Nelis Prins confirmed that Heyns had appeared in court on charges of rape and murder.
He added that preliminary investigations indicated that Sharné was killed on November 4.
The case was postponed until November 30 for further investigation. Heyns will remain in custody.
