Earthquake measuring 4.2 magnitude hits near Springbok

AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 4.2 magnitude hit near Springbok late on Tuesday night.

The earthquake was only reported on Wednesday morning by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) who are considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km beneath the epicentre late at night on Tuesday, at about 11pm.

Towns or cities near the epicentre where the quake hit might have felt a weak shaking.

Springbok has experienced seismic activity in the past. Notably, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake occurred on June 3, 1993, and a magnitude 4.5 event was recorded two years ago.
