THE DE Aar Regional Court sentenced 28-year-old Anthony Hector to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for damage to essential infrastructure.

The incident happened on December 1, 2022 in De Aar.

The court heard that on the said date, Hector, who was spotted inside the Transnet yard by a security officer, tried to ward off the officer with a knife.

The security officer called the police for assistance with the arrest.

The Pixley Ka Seme district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, applauded Detective Sergeant Shawn Moses for the “thorough investigation of the case”.

Mtukushe highlighted that the SAPS in the Northern Cape has noted the escalation in the theft of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

“As damage to and tampering with essential infrastructure is a priority for the provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, efforts will continue unabatedly to address this crime and to ensure that perpetrators committing these crimes will feel the full might of the law,” said Mtukushe.
