Construction to begin at Oppenheimer Gardens
CONSTRUCTION will soon begin on a section of the Oppenheimer Gardens in Kimberley for the purposes of a Great Hall and a Civic Square for Sol Plaatje University (SPU).
The SPU vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Andrew Crouch, detailed the latest construction project and the university’s strategies to address social issues, such as low economic growth, inequality, poverty, unemployment and limited opportunities, during a breakfast meeting and open day that was hosted on August 26.
The director of institutional advancement in the office of the vice-chancellor, Qondakele Sompondo, said that heads of schools, academic staff and prospective students were given a foretaste of what SPU had to offer, with the Education, Humanities, Natural and Applied Sciences and Economic Management and Sciences faculties having stalls spotlighting their unique offerings.
“The School of Natural and Applied Sciences wowed attendees with demonstrations of advanced robotic skills and interactive coding games. The day also featured lab tours, where prospective students could engage with scientific apparatus like the microscope and skeletal models, getting a sense of becoming a scientist. Other exhibitors shared some informative advice and guidelines on what the requirements are to study some of the academic programmes their schools have to offer,” said Sompondo.
He added that pupils were taken on a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities, faculties, lecture halls and library.
