UPINGTON will take centre stage in a provincial celebration of language, identity and heritage when the National Library of South Africa (NLSA), in partnership with the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, hosts a special commemoration of International Mother Language Day on February 24.
Observed globally each year on February 21, International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by Unesco to promote linguistic diversity, multilingualism, and the protection and preservation of mother languages. In South Africa – home to 12 official languages and a wealth of indigenous tongues – the day carries particular significance.
This year’s Northern Cape programme will be held under the theme: “Celebrating Our Identity: Preserving Indigenous Languages for Future Generations.” Organisers say the event aims to place a strong spotlight on the role mother languages play in improving educational outcomes, strengthening social cohesion, and safeguarding the country’s rich cultural heritage.
The celebration will bring together government, education stakeholders, cultural practitioners and community members, with the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture in the Northern Cape, Mangaliso Matika, and NLSA chief executive officer Dr Ralph Links among the expected attendees.
Beyond speeches and discussions, the programme will include a flag hosting ceremony at Paballelo High School, as well as book donation drives to SC Kearns High School and Cornelius Primary School – reinforcing the link between language, literacy and access to knowledge.
