THE SOUTH African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Nolloth has intercepted a delivery truck carrying a stash of illicit cigarettes valued at R259,886.80.

The acting station commander and a team member, who were en route to conduct a community awareness campaign in Sizamile, flagged down a suspicious vehicle on Tuesday.

With the driver’s consent, police conducted a search of the truck and uncovered 912 cartons of various illicit cigarette brands. Customs officials were summoned to the scene and confirmed the value of the seized goods.

According to officials, the confiscated cigarettes have been booked in as evidence and formally handed over to Customs for further processing and investigation.

The Northern Cape police said the successful operation is a testament to SAPS’ continued commitment to protecting communities and disrupting criminal enterprises in Port Nolloth and the broader Namakwa District.

SAPS reiterated its dedication to combating illicit trade and ensuring that those involved in such activities face the full force of the law. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help keep communities safe and secure.
