A PERSON of interest was questioned and later released after members of Operation Wanya Tsotsi handed a person linked to the alleged possession of a suspected AK-47 over to police last week.

Operation Wanya Tsotsi indicated that the person led them to where a weapon was hidden in the veld in Galeshewe.

The community crime-fighting organisation said a syndicate is believed to be linked to house and business robberies in the area.

“We are searching for a 9mm firearm that was apparently also hidden in the veld,” the organisation added.

The exhibit was taken in, although police indicated that it was a paintball gun.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Litabe said a person of interest was questioned and later released.

"No criminal case has been opened," he added.
