A TOTAL of 125 casual workers at Sol Plaatje Municipality received permanent letters of absorption on 12 February.

South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) local chairperson Ronney Morwe indicated they would continue fighting for the absorption of the next phase from July 1. “There are 131 workers who are next on the list, but we will push for the absorption of 200 workers. It was never an easy journey - we are going nowhere. We will fight until all 497 workers are absorbed.”

Samwu provincial secretary Pieter Demas stated many employees had worked at the municipality for decades without the dignity of basic benefits such as a pension fund or medical aid.

“The letters presented to workers signified a historic victory, directly resulting from years of relentless struggle, consistent pressure, and workers' unwavering outcry.”

“It is a sad reality some members passed away waiting for the security of a permanent post. Others now find themselves with only a few years left before retirement, having spent the bulk of their careers in a state of uncertainty.”

He pointed out that a turning point came after a "militant five-day protest action".

“Management was compelled to do the right thing and honour the demands of the working class. The atmosphere at the municipality was one of pure jubilation; workers were moved to tears of disbelief and joy, finally able to return home to their families and loved ones with the security they have fought so hard to achieve.”

Betty Hammer and Bianca Vanto, who had both worked at the fire department for 13 and 11 years, said they were elated to receive their letters.

“God is good,” they said.

Vanto stated that she resorted to borrowing money from loan sharks.

“I have a family to look after, and the loan companies charge interest of up to 30 percent.”

Hammer added that he wanted to spoil herself with her first permanent paycheck.

“I am going to book a full-body massage to relieve all my stress.”
