THE police in Danielskuil are investigating a culpable homicide case following a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on the R31 road on February 9 that claimed the life of the founder of  Kimberley4Kimberley non-profit organisation, DF Marais.

SAPS Northern Cape spokesperson Warrant Officer Molefi Shemane said the incident took place at around 6.30pm on Monday.

"The vehicle was travelling on the R31 road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, and it veered off the road.

"A 57-year-old man was declared deceased on the scene by the Emergency Medical Service. Police investigations are continuing," he said.

In a tribute, the CEO of the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Nocci), Sharon Steyn, stated that Marias was an invaluable member of the chamber.

"He played an instrumental role in Kimberley and the chamber for many years. He had an immense passion, determination and love for Kimberley. He was intent on making a difference at all costs, even if it was at his own expense.  He was always smiling or laughing - a professional gentleman who showed us that if we stood together, we can make a difference."

She added that Marais' dream was to fix all the potholes in the city and resurface the roads.

"As a small business owner, he could also only do so much.  He decided that he would get a public-private partnership established to support road repairs and upgrades in Kimberley.  He always believed that a collaboration between Sol Plaatje Municipality, business and the community remains essential as pressure on the city’s infrastructure continues.

"Kimberley 4 Kimberley is a collaboration between the Sol Plaatje Municipality, the Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NocciI), local businesses including Ekapa Mining and others."

She extended condolences to his family.

"He will always be remembered for his contribution to the local economy of Kimberley and the Northern Cape.  He was a legend to us all," Steyn added.

In a statement, Kimberley4Kimberley stated that Marais would be fondly remembered for his friendship and positive attitude.

"His presence left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His death is a great loss to the city, family, friends and everyone who knew him."

Cassie Carsten and the Absa Wildeklawer fraternity expressed their grief at Marais' death.

"He was a valued colleague and friend. We will remember him for his friendship and bringing about positive improvement in his community," he said.
