The Kuruman Regional Court has handed down a lengthy prison sentence to 35-year-old Tshepo Jantjie for business robbery and the murder of a shop owner.

A 35-YEAR-OLD man has been handed a 21-year prison sentence for the murder of a shop owner and business robbery in Tsineng. Tshepo Jantjie was convicted by the Kuruman Regional Court for the crimes committed on 16 January 2022, at a shop in Maipeing.
The court heard that Jantjie and an accomplice entered the shop, pretending to be customers. They produced firearms, threatened the 24-year-old owner, and demanded money and cigarettes. During the robbery, the owner was shot in the upper body.
The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes, airtime, and cellular phones.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, and the incident was reported to Tsineng SAPS, where a case of business robbery was opened.
On 8 February 2022, the victim succumbed to his injuries, and the charge was amended to include murder.
Detective Sergeant Mojaki Mogaswa's investigation led to Jantjie's arrest and subsequent conviction.
Following several court appearances, the accused was found guilty on charges of murder and business robbery. On Thursday, 5 February 2026, he was sentenced to an effective 21 years’ imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, welcomed the sentence and commended Detective Sergeant Mogaswa for his dedication and thorough investigation, which ensured justice for the victim and his family.
