A 41-YEAR-old Carnarvon man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for brutally assaulting his 11-year-old son in August last year.

The incident, which followed a dispute over a cellphone SIM card, left the child with serious physical injuries and emotional trauma.

The father, who was found guilty by the Carnarvon Magistrates’ Court on February 4, repeatedly lashed the child with a belt, punched, kicked and choked him, and struck him with a knee to the ribs. The child’s mother intervened to stop the assault.

The police investigation, led by Sergeant Marlon Eksteen of the Carnarvon SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, resulted in the father’s arrest on August 11 last year.

The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

The SAPS district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, praised Sergeant Eksteen for his dedication and professionalism in handling the case.
