Western Cape residents will have to brace themselves for severe thunderstorms over large parts of the province as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning, and a Yellow Level 4 warning for the Cape Winelands and Overberg regions.

The severe weather, expected to arrive on Sunday night into Monday, will involve a moderate risk of thunderstorms that may result in heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail and lightning, which could lead to localised flooding, difficult driving conditions and minor infrastructure damage in affected areas.

They added that localised loss of agricultural production and livestock is possible, as well as localised minor vehicle accidents, which will also lead to longer travel times. There is also a risk of runaway fires sparked from lightning strikes.

The weather follows a warning for severe thunderstorms over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the south-western interior of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.

“The Yellow Level 4 warning, which carries a higher impact, signals the potential for severe thunderstorms, particularly over the Cape Winelands and Overberg. These storms may bring intense rainfall over short periods, increasing the risk of flash flooding, flooded roads and low-lying areas, large hail, damaging winds, and dangerous travel conditions,” SAWS said.

Rainfall accumulations between 30-50mm can be expected in pockets.

“Residents in affected areas are advised to closely monitor weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, and never attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges.

“Vehicles should be parked under shelter where possible to reduce hail damage, and loose outdoor items should be secured. People are also urged to remain indoors during thunderstorms and to avoid open areas and tall trees due to the risk of lightning,” SAWS said.

As for what lies ahead for the rest of the week, the SAWS said that weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled, “with the possibility of additional showers along the Cape South coast through mid-week”.

“While conditions may gradually improve, further updates will be issued should the risk level change.

“Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather channels and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety,” they said.
