THE SOUTH African Police Service (SAPS) in the Namakwa district has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat illegal mining activities, arresting two men for allegedly trading diamonds without a licence.

The suspects, aged 25 and 34, were apprehended on Friday, 30 January, while operating from a parked Nissan Light Delivery Van in Port Nolloth.

Acting on an anonymous tip-off, police searched the vehicle and discovered a substantial amount of unpolished diamonds hidden in the steering wheel cover.

The value of the diamonds has not been determined.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Port Nolloth Court soon, facing charges related to the illegal possession of unpolished diamonds.

This arrest underscores SAPS's commitment to dismantling illegal diamond dealing and related crimes in the Namakwa district.
