IN THE EARLY hours of Saturday, January 10, at about 3am, officers from the Mothibistad SAPS were conducting a routine blue-light patrol along the N14 near Kagung Village when they stumbled upon a makeshift “stop‑and‑go” checkpoint.

The obstruction – a cluster of road construction signs and equipment – had been deliberately placed to mimic an official work zone. According to the police, the set‑up was a ruse: motorists who stopped were allegedly ambushed with stones and robbed of their belongings.

Acting quickly, the patrol removed the signs, cleared the road and restored normal traffic flow. No arrests were made and, at the time of writing, no formal robbery complaints had been lodged.

SAPS issued a travel alert after fake construction signs were found on the N14.

“These criminals are trying to turn a legitimate safety measure into a trap for unsuspecting drivers,” said a senior SAPS officer. “We urge everyone travelling after dark or before dawn to stay alert, keep windows up, and report any unusual roadblock or suspicious activity immediately.”

Police have asked the public to call the Mothibistad police station or use the MySAPS app to report anything that looks out of place. No incidents have been officially recorded yet, but authorities are treating the matter with the utmost seriousness.

In the meantime, motorists are reminded to:

  • Verify any roadwork signs during daylight or via official traffic updates.
  • Avoid stopping for unexpected checkpoints, especially in remote stretches.
  • Drive with headlights on low beam in low‑visibility areas and keep a safe distance from unfamiliar vehicles.

The SAPS says it will increase patrols on the N14 during the night hours and continues to investigate the source of the illegal roadblock.
