KURUMAN police apprehended a 43‑year‑old man this week after he was found with three Bonsmara cattle that were reportedly stolen from Dithakwaneng Village in the North West Province.

Acting on a tip that the suspect was en route to sell the animals to a well‑known trader in Kuruman on January 12, officers intercepted him on the outskirts of the town.

When questioned about the livestock, the man could not provide a satisfactory account of ownership. The cattle were seized, and the rightful owner later confirmed the animals as his through distinctive brand markings.

The suspect now faces a charge of “failure to give a satisfactory account of stock or produce”, and his vehicle – believed to have been used in the alleged theft – was also confiscated.

The acting district commissioner, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, praised the team for their rapid response, saying, “This arrest underscores our commitment to tackling stock theft and protecting the livelihoods of farmers in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.”

The recovered cattle have been returned to their owner, and authorities urge anyone with further information on similar incidents to contact the Kuruman police or the nearest SAPS station.

The vehicle believed to have been used in the alleged theft was also confiscated.
