Northern Cape shows biggest improvement in National Senior Certificate examinations

The Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube announced the overall pass rate as being 88 percent during an awards ceremony that was held for the Class of 2025 on Monday

The Northern Cape achieved an 87, 79  percent pass rate, coming in at sixth place in the country. 

The province showed a steady improvement over the previous years where it attained 82, 4 percent in 2024, 75, 8 percent in 2023 and 74, 2 percent in 2022. 

Releasing the National Senior Certificate results for the Class of 2025 on January 12, the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube stated that the Northern Cape showed the greatest improvement out of all the provinces. 

She announced the overall pass rate a being at a record breaking 88 percent, making it the highest pass rate in the country’s history. 

Kwa Zulu Natal is the top performing province at 90 percent with the Free State coming in second with a pass rate of 89, 33 percent. 

Gauteng achieved a pass rate of 89, 06 percent followed by the North West at third place with 88, 49 percent and the Western Cape at fifth place with 88, 2 percent. 

Mpumalanga achieved a pass rate of 86, 55 percent at seventh place, with Limpopo with 86, 15 percent and the Eastern Cape placed at ninth position with 84, 17 percent. 

Top Northern Cape matriculants to be honoured

The Premier Dr Zamani Saul, accompanied by the MEC for Education Abraham Vosloo, will announce the Northern Cape 2025 matric results on January 13 at the Old CRC building in  Kimberley at 9.30am.

Spokesperson for the Department of Education Geoffrey van der Merwe said the top performing Grade 12 pupils in 2025 as well a the top performing schools per district would be announced during the matric awards ceremony. 

"A total of 14 210 full time candidates were registered for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. We commend all the learners, parents, principals, invigilators and all the departmental staff for their invaluable support and commitment to ensure a credible NSC examinations, free from any irregularities." 

He added that the Department of Education declared the 2025 National Senior Certificate Examinations as credible.

"The Quality Assurer, Umalusi found that we have sound systems in place and the whole examination process was conducted with integrity,"  Van der Merwe said.
