WITH the festive season drawing to a close, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape has appealed to motorists and travellers returning home to prioritise road safety and responsible driving.

Police have warned that traffic volumes are expected to increase significantly on major routes as families and holidaymakers make their return journeys. Road users are advised to plan their trips carefully, allow sufficient travel time and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off.

In a statement, SAPS reminded motorists to comply with traffic laws at all times, including adhering to speed limits and avoiding reckless or negligent driving behaviour.

“The SAPS hereby reminds drivers to obey traffic laws at all times, adhere to speed limits, and avoid reckless and negligent driving behaviour such as overtaking on dangerous parts of the road and curves,” the statement said. “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be tolerated.”

Police officers will maintain a heightened presence on major roads through high-visibility operations, including roadblocks and vehicle checks, aimed at enforcing compliance and promoting safer travel.

Don't drive tired

Motorists are further encouraged to take regular rest breaks, share driving responsibilities where possible and avoid fatigue, which remains a major contributing factor to road accidents.

Pedestrians have also been urged to remain vigilant, particularly in high-traffic areas. SAPS advised pedestrians to wear visible clothing when walking after dark to reduce the risk of accidents.

Passengers are reminded to wear seatbelts at all times and to report unsafe driving behaviour to the authorities.

“The SAPS calls on all road users to work together in ensuring that everyone reaches their destinations safely,” police said. “Responsible behaviour on the roads can save lives.”

Law-enforcement operations will continue throughout the return-home period as part of ongoing efforts to promote safer roads across the Northern Cape.
