A SWIFT response by police in Kathu has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of goods believed to have been stolen during a New Year’s Day housebreaking.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane released the statement on behalf of the South African Police Service (SAPS), detailing how members acted on information received about suspected stolen property in the Mapoteng area.
Working in conjunction with Rhino Security Company, SAPS members followed up on the tip-off on Thursday, January 1, and moved to an identified residence where the items were allegedly being stored.
According to the statement, police acting on the information approached the house in Mapoteng. A search of the premises was conducted, during which a range of household and personal items was recovered. The confiscated goods included a television, a speaker, shoes, clothing, bags and suitcases. The total value of the recovered property is estimated at more than R80,000.
Police believe the items may be linked to a housebreaking complaint reported in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Following the recovery of the goods, two suspects were arrested at the scene. The suspects are a 35-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.
According to the police statement, the pair were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding ownership of the recovered items, which led to their arrest.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Kathu Magistrate’s Court. The exact date of their court appearance was not specified in the statement.
Police confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing, and no further details regarding the housebreaking complaint or possible additional charges were provided.
The South African Police Service in the Northern Cape has urged members of the public to assist in crime prevention by reporting suspicious activity.
