A KAKAMAS man who fabricated a hijacking story in an attempt to lodge a fraudulent insurance claim has been convicted of perjury and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, Mr Aubin Bosch was recently found guilty and sentenced after an investigation revealed that the hijacking he reported in March 2025 never took place.

False hijacking claim reported in Kakamas

According to the South African Police Service, Bosch initially reported that he had been hijacked at gunpoint at an intersection in Kakamas. He claimed that two unknown male suspects assaulted him and hit him on the head, then forcefully stole his blue Toyota Yaris.

The vehicle was later reportedly involved in a collision, and a case was registered at the time. The investigation was assigned to Sergeant John Manzana of the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Upington.

Investigation exposes fabricated incident

During the course of the investigation, it was established that no hijacking had in fact occurred. Evidence showed that the incident had been fabricated in an attempt to submit a fraudulent insurance claim.

Further investigations revealed that on the day of the alleged hijacking, Bosch was intoxicated and had driven the vehicle into a canal at Soetap Farm. As a result, the matter was classified as a false complaint and the docket was submitted for a decision.

Perjury case registered and sentence imposed

After perusal of the docket, the Prosecutor found that the administration of justice had been defeated. A case of perjury was subsequently registered against Bosch at Kakamas SAPS.

Bosch was arrested and appeared in court to account for his actions. He was later convicted and sentenced as outlined.

The District Commissioner of the ZF Mgcawu District, Major General Monica Sebili, commended Sergeant John Manzana for his thorough investigation and dedication, which led to the successful conviction.
