Three people, including a child, were killed when a double-storey building collapsed in Doornkop, Soweto, in the early hours of Sunday, authorities confirmed.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (JEMS) said the alarm was raised shortly after 3 am.

Six people were inside the structure at the time of the collapse, with three trapped beneath the rubble.

All six were reportedly extricated and taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

A child and two adult women later succumbed to their injuries, according to the report.

Three other patients remain in the hospital, with their conditions not yet disclosed.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation by city authorities.

This incident comes amid the ongoing infrastructure crisis in the province.

Experts and political parties, including ActionSA, have repeatedly warned about overcrowding, substandard construction, and illegal alterations in some urban areas.

Emergency officials urged communities to report visible cracks, shifting walls, and unsafe buildings before tragedy strikes.
