Sol Plaatje Municipality officially transferred two refurbished sedans – a Chevrolet Aveo and a Toyota Corolla – to its Security Unit on Friday.
The refurbished vehicles will be deployed immediately to enhance patrol capabilities and ensure a quicker response to incidents across the municipality’s service area.
Sol Plaatje executive mayor Martha Bartlett praised the initiative, noting that the vehicles were previously in service with the Traffic Department and had undergone extensive repairs by the Mechanical Unit’s workshop.
“These cars are now fit for purpose and ready for the serious task ahead. By branding them clearly, residents will be able to identify municipal security personnel quickly and feel confident approaching them with any concerns,” she said.
The Security Unit’s increased visibility is intended to bolster the municipality’s anti‑crime stance and reinforce the partnership between local authorities and the community.
Residents are encouraged to stop security officers whenever they need to raise an alarm, as each call‑out strengthens the joint effort against theft and vandalism of municipal assets.
The handover follows feedback gathered during a recent Safety and Security Workshop, where citizens highlighted the need for more responsive security measures.
Sol Plaatje Municipality's Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security councillor Nomazizi Shwababa said community safety was inseparably linked to the protection of municipal infrastructure.
“We will continue to assess and implement internal interventions to wage a sustained fight against the menacing crime that currently grips the municipality.”
The handover ceremony follows feedback from a recent Safety and Security Workshop, underscoring the council’s commitment to responsive, community‑focused policing.
