A 32-YEAR-OLD woman from Calvinia, Ragel Baardman, has been sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment for the murder of her uncle, Jan Muller, 47.

The case dates back to June 3 2020, when Calvinia police responded to a report of a fatal stabbing.

Officers found Muller with a chest wound and pronounced him dead on the scene. Investigations led to Baardman’s arrest. She was released on bail but failed to appear for subsequent court hearings, prompting a warrant for her arrest.

Through cooperation between the Calvinia Detectives and Western Cape police, Baardman was located in Cape Town and re‑arrested.

On December 9, the Calvinia regional court convicted her of murder and imposed a 15-year term, of which five years were suspended for a period of five years.

SAPS provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola welcomed the judgment and praised Detective Sergeant Brigette van Wyk of the Calvinia Detectives Unit for her diligent work and collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority, which secured the conviction.
